Giving Back to a Community in Need

Over the last year, Litigation Insights has had the opportunity to volunteer time within the community.  We have been fortunate to work with three fantastic organizations:  Harvesters, Kansas City Rescue Mission (KCRM) and The Salvation Army.  Each of these organizations works in the Kansas City area to enhance the lives of our less fortunate neighbors.  In this issue of Insights, we feature these groups and how they are benefiting our community.

harvestersHarvesters’ network of agencies provides a helping hand to tens of thousands of people every week.  As our local response to hunger, this food bank could not function without generous support from individuals and companies across our community.  Here are some ways that you or your organization can make a difference through donating to or volunteering for Harvesters.

  • Hours volunteered for Harvesters equal the work of about 64 full-time employees each year.  Just one hour or afternoon of your time can make a difference!
    Give Time
  • Harvesters uses less than 3% of donated resources for administration and fundraising.  Instead, it spends the bulk those resources in program areas directly related to food acquisition, food distribution and nutrition education.
    Give Dollars
  • Harvesters could not continue its work in the community without generous donations of food it receives every day.

Kansas City Rescue Mission (KCRM) welcomes the poor, homeless, hungry and hurting. A proven path from RELIEF to RECOVERY to RE-ENTRY, offers those in need freedom from the past and hope for the future, along with food, safe shelter, warm beds and clean facilities.  KCRM also offers proven recovery programs, as well as job and life-skills training.  Hundreds of people use their services each year.

  • Community volunteers work to support and strengthen KCRM’s staff, enhance its client services and offer positive and life-changing experiences to our volunteers.
    Give Time
  • KCRM receives financial support from individuals, foundations, corporations and churches.  Support from these and other sources is critical to KCRM’s efforts to help the less fortunate.
    Give Dollars
  • KCRM has regular needs for household, medical and office supplies, as well as clothing and food.  Their website maintains a list of the organization’s immediate needs.

The Salvation Army’s Adopt-A-Family (AAF) program matches impoverished families with an individual or group sponsors to meet their tangible needs during the Christmas season.

  • Without the benefit of an adoption, these families would be looking forward to a very grim holiday. The Salvation Army works to meet these families’ needs once or, on very rare occasions, twice in a lifetime.
  • Social workers take an inventory of each family’s needs is taken and a Christmas wish list is compiled. This gift guide may include toys, clothing, household items and information regarding the utilities and heating sources.
  • When an Adopt-A-Family match is made, the family information and wish lists are sent to the sponsor. The Salvation Army ensures that these families receive donors’ gifts and food during the week before Christmas.
